Back to school season is in full swing, so you have probably seen those big yellow buses around. Every fall, there seems to be confusion about when you need to stop for a school bus. There are laws pertaining to this subject, so let’s give you a reminder.

School bus laws in California
According to Californian legislation, drivers must stop when they are behind or in the oncoming lane of a school bus with its lights flashing and stop sign extended. Failure to do this can result in a fine of up to $1,000 and you may have your license suspended for up to one year. Any time you are on the same road as a school bus, you must come to a stop if the school bus is stopped as has its stop sign out. This does not apply if you are on the opposite side of a divided highway. In that case, continue driving.
