Important Hurricane Safety Tips 

There have been numerous devastating storms within the past few years, and with the peak of hurricane season upon us, it’s crucial to know how to stay safe during severe weather.  So, we are sharing some important hurricane safety tips that can help you prepare and stay safe before, during and after a hurricane. 

What Should You Do Before a Hurricane? 

Before the hurricane hits, and even before there is a chance for a storm, there are several important things to do that will help you prepare and stay safe for when it hits: 

  • Prepare a family disaster plan, such as evacuation routes, where to go in emergency (such as a shelter), who to call and how to communicate during an emergency, what to do with your pets 
  • Know what the sirens and alerts look and sound like for your location 
  • Install sewer backflow valves to protect your property 
  • Review your insurance policies for your home/car and catalog your belongings 
  • Keep your important documents in a secure and safe place that won’t be damaged from a hurricane 
  • Bring your pets to an animal shelter for their safety 
  • Secure your property against strong winds and flooding 
  • Prepare a “go bag” in case you must leave immediately 
  • Familiarize yourself with emergency guidelines for your area 
  • Stock up and update emergency supplies

What Should You Do During a Hurricane? 

There are many scenarios that can happen during a hurricane, so it is important to understand what your options are and follow the guidelines from your local authorities.

  • Leave immediately with your “go bag” if ordered/advised to evacuate 
  • Stick to designated evacuation routes, taking shortcuts can be dangerous or they can be blocked 
  • Move to higher ground before the flood waters reach you 
  • Stay indoors and away from windows/glass 
  • Don’t use generators, gas-powered equipment, grills, camp stove or charcoal-burning equipment inside or in enclosed areas 
  • Keep your flashlights, water and emergency supplies nearby in case of outages 
  • Don’t walk or drive in flooded areas 
  • Call 9-1-1 for immediate dangers and emergencies

What Should You Do After a Hurricane? 

Even after the storm has passed, there are still various dangers that you need to stay aware of. 

  • Only return to areas after authorities give the okay 
  • Don’t walk of drive in flooded areas 
  • Stay vigilant for downed/unstable tress, poles, powerlines, signs, etc. 
  • Wear sturdy shoes and gloves when outside 
  • Don’t remove heavy debris by yourself 
  • Continue to drink bottled water until authorities say tap water is safe 
  • Don’t enter damaged buildings until after they have been inspected 
  • Don’t use electrical devices when you’re wet, it’s wet or you are in water 
  • Follow pet safety guidelines 
  • Remember to thoroughly clean/disinfect everything—germs and bacteria are in mud, floodwaters, etc.
